whatsnew

Seven works of art including some by Picasso and Monet were stolen from this Netherlands art museum last October.

Now some media reports say a Romanian woman, though to be the mother of one of the suspected thieves, has incinerated them.

The local media reports say she's admitted burning the masterpieces, worth tens of millions of dollars, to destroy the evidence.

The stolen works included Monet's 'Waterloo Bridge, London…

De Haan's Autoportrait…

And Gaugin's Femme devant une fenetre ouverte.

Romanian authorities arrested three men in January on suspicion of stealing the paintings. The Romanain girlfriend of one of them was arrested by Dutch police.

In March a man trying to sell the paintings back to the gallery was arrested in Germany.

It wasn't clear if he was part of the gang or whether he really had access to the stolen works.
